2007 Farm Bill

Urgent Action Alert: Tell Congress To Make Local Food , Small Farmers and Sustainable Agriculture Part of National Policy

As you know, this summer, Congress is considering the Farm Bill under Iowa's own Senator Harkin's leadership. As Iowans, this gives us a unique and powerful opportunity to make our voices heard on Capitol Hill on behalf of our nation's small and mid-size farms,  sustainable agriculture and local farming.

www.healthyfarmbill.org  is  a national, non-partisan, e-campaign urging Congress to make local food, small farmers and sustainable agriculture part of national policy. We at Edible Iowa River Valley, Eastern and Central Iowa's only magazine specifically dedicated to Iowa's local and artisanal food and food producers, are delighted to support these efforts.

Each person registered at  www.healthyfarmbill.org, is another person who supports farm and food polices for an equitable and sustainable food system which will benefit local markets, family farmers, the environment and the health of all Americans.    At www.healthyfarmbill.org, you can tell Congress you believe that policies supporting local and healthy food belong in the Farm Bill so that local and healthy food can belong to everyone in Iowa as well as the rest of the country.

The Farm Bill only comes up for reauthorization once every 5 years, so this is the time to act! It will take you just a moment to log on to www.healthyfarmbill.org now, and it will help the whole country later.

Iowa Farmers Union
Iowa Farmers Union was chartered in 1915 as a chapter of the National Farmers Union. Today our membership comprises 1,300 people, almost all family farmers, who are committed to sustainable agriculture practices, fair and open markets, and independent family farm agriculture. We are affiliated with the Iowa chapter of the NFO, Women Food and Agriculture Network, and Iowa Renewable Energy Association. We maintain a lobbyist at the state capitol during the legislative session each year, and members from Iowa fly to Washington, DC. each fall to join other NFU members in visiting members of Congress in their offices at Capitol Hill to advocate for family farmers and ranchers.  For more information:  www.iafu.org
